I’m Manuel, Co-CEO of Ambar. We help GCs build legal functions with more range, more speed and less permanent complexity.

Today’s note is about two of my favorite authors.

Chip and Dan Heath tell a brilliant story in Made to Stick.

A Stanford researcher asked people to tap famous songs on a table.

Simple songs.

Happy Birthday, for example.

The tapper hears the whole song in their head.

Melody.

Rhythm.

Cake.

Possibly one depressed colleague singing too loudly in the office kitchen.

So the tapper thinks:

“Obvious. Anyone will get this.”

The listener hears something different.

Tap.

Tap tap.

Tap.

A nervous desk trying to communicate.

Before the test, the tappers thought listeners would guess around 50% of the songs.

They guessed 3 out of 120.

2.5%.

A massacre, but with furniture.

This is the curse of knowledge.

Once you know something, it becomes almost impossible to remember what it feels like not to know it.

Legal lives here.

“This is a standard limitation of an indemnity.”

The sales team hears “Tap tap tap”.

“This is a transfer risk assessment problem.”

The M&A team hears “Tap tap tap”.

“This AI tool creates a data privacy and data-use concern.”

Tap tap tap, but now everyone is scared and someone has opened a spreadsheet.

The business is not stupid.

It just cannot hear the song in your head.

That is why the best in-house lawyers do not simply know more.

They translate better.

They make the risk audible.

They make the trade-off visible.

They make the next step feel obvious.

At Ambar, we help GCs bring in hours specialist knowledge into the legal team in a way the business can actually use.

Privacy. Payments. OFAC/Sanctions. Cybersecurity. Energy. AI. New jurisdictions.

Not just to solve one matter.

To leave the internal team sharper for the next one.

Because influence is not tapping harder.

It is making sure the room hears the music.

Before you go: how Ambar can help

We help GCs access senior independent legal talent when their teams need more range, more speed or more specialist judgment.

1) Fractional counsel for capacity gaps
When a key lawyer moves role, goes on leave, or gets pulled into a strategic project, we help cover the gap without adding permanent structure.

2) Specialist expertise for new areas
Privacy, AI, technology contracts, payments, cybersecurity, energy, regulatory or new jurisdictions — senior lawyers who bring knowledge into the team, not just hours.

3) The layer between in-house and traditional firms
For work that is too senior for junior execution, too close to the business for a law firm machine, and too temporary for a permanent hire.

4) Legal AI that learns your standard
We help legal teams turn senior judgment into playbooks, model answers, red flags, evals and error-analysis frameworks for the AI tools their teams already use.

Not generic AI. Your legal standard.
