I’m Manuel, Co-CEO of Ambar. We help GCs build legal functions with more range, more speed and less permanent complexity.

Yesterday we talked about Polaroid.

Today, Kodak.

Which is usually told as a very simple story:

“Kodak invented the digital camera and was too stupid to use it.”

Nice.

Clean.

Also, maybe too easy.

Kodak did invent the first digital camera in 1975.

It was built by Steven Sasson, a young engineer inside the company.

It was ugly.

Slow.

Big.

Basically a toaster with ambition.

But it worked.

So why did Kodak not become Apple?

Well, because Kodak was not really a camera company.

Kodak was a film company.

More than that, it saw itself as a chemical company.

Its money was in film, processing, paper, chemicals, distribution and a beautiful business model where every photo created more demand for Kodak products.

Digital photography did not improve that machine.

It attacked it.

So what was Kodak supposed to do?

Kill its best business early?

Become a digital camera company in a market that phones would later destroy?

Compete with Apple and Samsung?

Sell sensors?

Build Instagram?

Easy to answer now.

Much harder when the old business is still printing money and the new one looks like a bad margin with a screen.

That is the uncomfortable part.

Sometimes the danger is not missing the future.

It is seeing the future and not knowing which part of it should be yours.

Legal has the same problem with AI.

The question is not:

“Should we use AI?”

Of course.

The real question is:

Which part of the new legal operating model should we own?

The tools?

The playbooks?

The evals?

The workflows?

The contract standards?

The legal memory?

The way the company thinks about risk?

At Ámbar, we help legal teams build that owned layer.

Senior lawyers turn judgment into playbooks, model answers, red flags, evals and error-analysis frameworks for the AI tools your team already uses.

Not generic AI.

Your legal standard.

Because the smartest move is not always to chase the next camera.

Sometimes it is to know what business you are really in before the world changes the answer for you.

Before you go: how Ambar can help

We help GCs access senior independent legal talent when their teams need more range, more speed or more specialist judgment.

1) Fractional counsel for capacity gaps
When a key lawyer moves role, goes on leave, or gets pulled into a strategic project, we help cover the gap without adding permanent structure.

2) Specialist expertise for new areas
Privacy, AI, technology contracts, payments, cybersecurity, energy, regulatory or new jurisdictions — senior lawyers who bring knowledge into the team, not just hours.

3) The layer between in-house and traditional firms
For work that is too senior for junior execution, too close to the business for a law firm machine, and too temporary for a permanent hire.

4) Legal AI that learns your standard
We help legal teams turn senior judgment into playbooks, model answers, red flags, evals and error-analysis frameworks for the AI tools their teams already use.

Not generic AI. Your legal standard.
