George Lucas’s best special effect was not on screen.

It was in the contract.

After American Graffiti, Lucas could have asked Fox for much more money to make Star Wars.

He did not.

What he really wanted was control of the future.

His lawyer, Tom Pollock, helped him keep the sequel rights.

Later, when Lucas financed The Empire Strikes Back himself, Fox received limited distribution rights.

Lucasfilm kept almost everything else, including the merchandising.

At the time, this probably looked like legal detail.

Then came the toys.

The sequels.

The television rights.

The games.

The lunchboxes.

A surprising amount of human civilisation now exists because somebody wanted a plastic lightsaber.

Disney eventually bought Lucasfilm for about $4 billion.

Nobody put that value on Legal’s timesheet.

That is the problem when GCs explain their contribution.

Legal’s biggest wins often appear in someone else’s P&L.

The product launched.

The market opened.

The data remained usable.

The company kept the right to license elsewhere.

The first customer did not receive exclusivity over the future.

The CEO sees revenue.

Legal remembers the sentence that kept it possible.

At Ambar, we bring senior fractional IP and technology lawyers into new AI products, data partnerships, licensing models and unfamiliar business lines while the commercial model is still being designed.

Not to review the future after someone else has sold it.

To help the GC preserve the rights, options and freedom the company may need if the idea actually works.

Because the most valuable legal decision is often invisible on signing day.

Five years later, it may be the business.

Before you go: how Ambar can help

We help GCs access senior independent legal talent when their teams need more range, more speed or more specialist judgment.

1) Fractional counsel for capacity gaps
When a key lawyer moves role, goes on leave, or gets pulled into a strategic project, we help cover the gap without adding permanent structure.

2) Specialist expertise for new areas
Privacy, AI, technology contracts, payments, cybersecurity, energy, regulatory or new jurisdictions — senior lawyers who bring knowledge into the team, not just hours.

3) The layer between in-house and traditional firms
For work that is too senior for junior execution, too close to the business for a law firm machine, and too temporary for a permanent hire.

4) Legal AI that learns your standard
We help legal teams turn senior judgment into playbooks, model answers, red flags, evals and error-analysis frameworks for the AI tools their teams already use.

Not generic AI. Your legal standard.
