Weil announced its wind down.
Three days later, the entire legal industry became Nostradamus.
Of course it was going to happen.
The succession was messy.
Partners were leaving.
The merger talks failed.
Everybody saw it coming.
Apparently.
Small problem.
Before the announcement, Weil was still a 1,200 lawyer firm with more than $2 billion in revenue and nearly $5.6 million in profit per equity partner.
Not exactly a man selling watches from inside his coat.
In the 1970s, psychologist Baruch Fischhoff asked people to estimate possible outcomes from President Nixon’s trips to China and the Soviet Union.
After the trips, he asked them to remember their original predictions.
People remembered giving higher probabilities to events that had actually happened.
They did not just reinterpret the past.
They quietly rewrote their own forecast.
This is hindsight bias.
Legal postmortems love it.
The deal failed.
Legal should have known.
The supplier collapsed.
The warning signs were obvious.
Maybe.
Or maybe the decision was reasonable based on what was known then.
One protection is painfully simple:
Write it down.
What do we know?
What are we assuming?
What probability do we give each outcome?
What would change our minds?
At Ambar, Fractional Counsel can keep that decision record on the client side of a major deal, dispute or investigation.
Facts.
Assumptions.
Advice.
External firms.
Decision points.
So when people move, memories change or a firm disappears, the company still knows why it decided what it decided.
The result looks obvious now.
The decision was made then.
Before you go: how Ambar can help
We help GCs access senior independent legal talent when their teams need more range, more speed or more specialist judgment.
1) Fractional counsel for capacity gaps
When a key lawyer moves role, goes on leave, or gets pulled into a strategic project, we help cover the gap without adding permanent structure.
2) Specialist expertise for new areas
Privacy, AI, technology contracts, payments, cybersecurity, energy, regulatory or new jurisdictions — senior lawyers who bring knowledge into the team, not just hours.
3) The layer between in-house and traditional firms
For work that is too senior for junior execution, too close to the business for a law firm machine, and too temporary for a permanent hire.
4) Legal AI that learns your standard
We help legal teams turn senior judgment into playbooks, model answers, red flags, evals and error-analysis frameworks for the AI tools their teams already use.
Not generic AI. Your legal standard.
